“Look at the waterfall over there all casual like…”

Skabu - Alsund

We woke up in Kit’s lovely cabin and cleaned up the remainder of the wine and the reindeer from the night before, and had our final discussion on whether or not we could make it to Beregen or not. Unfortunately it was decided we could not reasonably make it there in a timely manner, and still get everyone up to the North Cape (or us to Stockholm on our schedule).  I was a bit sad, oh well, in all likelihood it would have just been another city for us to get lost in.

Kit promised to take us on some back roads (which is just what Milo needs) so we would see a bit of “Real Norway”.  So we drove through some mountain passes and an area that looked like the moon in Peru, had some pancakes with sour cream and rhubarb jam, and generally took photos wherever Kit told us we should take photos.

We were chatting with Dave about his waving to other motorcycles, apparently this was required no matter what the road conditions are.  Then Dave said, yeah I always have to wave to other campers/caravans when I drive mine, and also to other buses when I drive my double decker (we won’t even touch that one).  So it seems you have to wave in any minority vehicle, and Jonathan realized that we are, in fact in a minority vehicle and has been giving and receiving waves of acknowledgement from other drivers of classic cars. Ten cool points for Milo.

Today we also made it to Geirangerfjord (and the 2,000 mile mark in our journey).  This fjord Kit assured us was the most beautiful in all of Norway, and it’s hard to argue.  There were countless waterfalls and a huge beautiful blue fjord set deep into a ravine, fantastic.

We finally made it to Alsund late that evening and looked for somewhere to camp (apparently you can camp anywhere in Norway as long as it’s 150 meters from a house, not from someone’s land, but from their house).  Unfortunately (un is optional), it was too windy and too cold and Kit works for a hotel chain which had two hotels in the city, so rather than roughing it and camping, we stayed in a lovely hotel with a great view for a discount rate. Score.
