“The Disney Castle is broken”

Salzburg-Lindau (Lake Constance)

After a few drinks the night before, we were all getting a little carried away with thinking Christine could casually hop in the back of Milo, and she could ride with us for the next day or 2 (she’s hitch-hiking her way back to Copenhagen). However, when we did try to do some bag re-jigging, it became abundantly clear that you wouldn’t even get a small dog in the back of the car – let alone another human being.

Our plan today was a simple one. See that famous white Disney looking castle thing, nestled in amongst the mountains of Bavaria. We did a little check online as Jonas mentioned there may be some building work going on. And, in typical fashion, it was. But, we were meant to see it last year, so we thought what the heck, we’ll do it anyway.

Unfortunately, the castle was properly broken, and has now taken the pride of place on top of the ‘nemesis list’. Not only was there floor to ceiling scaffolding on the whole of the building that anyone can see (unless you’re in a helicopter and can see the back-side), but the next English tour that was available was at 6pm. Considering it was 2pm, that was pretty much out of the question. Even the 4pm German-only audio tour at 4pm got fully booked while we were standing in the queue. It looks like Hair’ventures is simply not meant to see this thing.

That threw us a little, as we still had a few hours of driving available to us, but had originally planned on just camping near the castle (‘camping’ in more ways than one, if you read the story behind King Ludwig II who built the castle). There was a big lake a couple of hours away, so we thought we’d head for that and camp up there. I don’t know why I was surprised, but as with all my experience so far of European campsites, it leaves a lot to be desired. But, I threw my inherent snobbery aside, and Meg & I drank Rose from plastic cups at the water’s edge, to ensure we kept the days ‘camp’ theme alive.
